Character Claim 3

  • Students at DDES leverage their own learning to improve the world around them.

At DDES, we recognize that in order for students to develop a deep understanding of their place in our world they need to contribute to making it better.  Service is the ultimate expression of crew, and reinforces our belief that we should all “get smart” in order to “do good.”  When students engage in a deep study of a compelling topic, they have an intrinsic desire to help out and make a difference.  Our goal is to leverage this desire by creating a connected service learning opportunity within every expedition.  Currently, our best examples of service learning are connected to the second grade trains expedition and the fourth grade climate change expedition.  In addition to external service, fourth graders at DDES are invited to apply to serve on the Adventure Leadership Team, which is a group that supports great adventure experiences for younger students.  Kids who are selected for service on this team learn about their own leadership styles in order to impact others at our school on adventure trips.  We are convinced that service in the community and at school helps to empower students to actively contribute to making the world a better place.
